The first session of the IAAF World Championships starts tonight at 7:00pm. The opening night at London Stadium looks set to be a star studded one, with the likes of Sir Mo Farah and Usain Bolt competing on night one.
Farah is competing in the only final of night one; the 10,000m (9:20pm). The Brit aims to win his third consecutive world title, in front of a home crowd. Fellow Brit Laura Muir will begin her double medal bid with the heat for the 1500m scheduled at 7:35pm, Muir had a brilliant 2017, in March she won two golds at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
The second heat of the women’s 1500m see’s world leader Sifan Hassan compete, she will face stiff competition from world record holder Genzebe Dibaba. Genzebe’s sister Tirunesh is also a world record holder in the 5000m, making them the only pair of siblings in history to hold concurrent world records.
British record holder, Holly Bradshaw is among those in the pole vault qualifying, scheduled at 7:45pm.
The opening round of the 100m’s begins tonight, and it will mark the beginning of the end for superstar Usain Bolt, who said London 2017 would be his final tournament before retirement. Bolt will compete against Yohan Blake, and American duo Christian Coleman and Justin Gaitlin in tonights heat at 8:20pm. Canadian athlete Andre De Grasse who got the silver medal in Rio just behind Bolt, was a late withdrawal through injury.
