ATHLETES ENJOY SPORTS PERSONALITY NOMINATIONS AFTER STADIUM'S GOLDEN SUMMER

A host of athletes who captured the world’s attention during London Stadium’s golden summer of athletics have been nominated for various Sports Personality of the Year Awards by the BBC.

Mo Farah and Jonnie Peacock have received nominations for Sports Personality of the Year, GB Captain Aled Davies has been put forward for the BBC Wales award, and the Overseas Sports Personality of the Year nominations have seen Tatyana McFadden and Sally Pearson’s names entered in the final running.

Mo Farah bid farewell to London Stadium in style this summer. First, he completed a trademark victory in the 3,000m in the Muller Anniversary Games Diamond League meeting at the venue where he shot to fame in 2012.

Farah showed his blistering pace during the last lap yet again, as the 34-year-old went head-to-head with Spain’s Adel Mechaal, but it was Farah who pushed hardest as he came home in a time of 7:35.15.

His feats were surpassed in August at the same venue. Farah win his third consecutive 10,000m gold in the IAAF World Championships at London Stadium, also winning silver in the 5000m later in the tournament.

Jonnie Peacock overcame cramp in his warm up to take gold in the T44 100m final during this summer’s IPC World ParaAthletics Championships at London Stadium. Peacock crossed the line in 10.75 seconds for his second world title.

During the heats, Peacock was seen on camera mouthing ‘wow’ as the roar rose around London Stadium on his announcement. He rewarded the fans with a personal best of 10.64 seconds, just three hundredths of a second outside the world record.

GB captain Aled Davies has also been nominated for BBC Wales’ Sports Personality of the Year, after reaffirming his dominance during the IPC World ParaAthletics at London Stadium.

Davies successfully defended his F42 discus and F42 shot put to win gold in both events, setting a new world record of 17.52m in the latter.

For Overseas Sports Personality of the Year, two of this summer’s standout performers have received a nomination.

Wheelchair racer Tatyana McFadden was peerless in the IPC World ParaAthletics Championships, winning all four of her events at London Stadium.

The seven-time Paralympic gold medallist took the T54 titles in the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m. A feat impressive enough in its own right, made more so by the fact that she had been ruled out for much of the season after suffering severe blood clots which required surgery.

Australian hurdler Sally Pearson capped an extraordinary comeback from serious injury to claim gold in the 100m hurdles at London Stadium.

The 31-year-old was competing in her first major championships for four years, overcoming serious wrist, hamstring and achilles injuries.
