Last night has left the world of athletics speechless. Emotional goodbyes, medal celebrations and national euphoria, still catching your breath? Well there’s still one more day of action at London Stadium in the IAAF World Athletic Championships, and it’s set to go out with a bang, literally wait for the fireworks!
Team GB hope to carry the wave of momentum from last night’s relay rollercoasters into the 4x400m finals. The women can claim a fourth successive podium with a medal in their final at 8:55.
Perry-Shakes Drayton returned from long-term injury to guide them safely through the heat. Her first major competition since the 2013 world championships, she’ll want a medal to take home to end a glorious comeback.
The men qualified as fastest losers but following the historic feat of their 4x100m team-mates, they should feel inspired. USA are overwhelming favourites for a seventh victory in succession in the event, but GB took bronze in Beijing two years ago, can they add to the medal tally at 9:15?
Laura Muir has a second go for gold in the 5,000m final at 7:35. Elish McColgan joins her on track, trying to achieve a first ever medal in the 5,000m for Great Britain. 10,000m champion Almaz Ayana starts as the women to beat, taking the gold 45 seconds clear of the competition earlier this week.
Moving to middle-distance, Lynsey Sharp competes in the 800m final at 8:10, only due to her disqualification being overturned. A determined semi-final run resulted in a DQ for shoving American Charlene Lipsey. But now she has her chance at medalling in a home championship, yet Caster Semenya will take some beating.
Chris O’Hare’s qualification was more straightforward for the 1500m final. A European bronze medallist in 2014, he faces tough competition to win a first global medal at 8:30.
Elsewhere, 2012 bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz tackles the High Jump from 7:00. Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim is the world’s best, winning every Diamond League event he’s competed at this year. Yet, he’s never held a major gold, can Grabarz ruin his script?
