It may have only been three months, but it feels like an eternity since West Ham were in action in the Premier League. This weekend sees the anticipated return as the Hammers begin their campaign with a trip to Old Trafford, taking on Manchester United. Never the easiest trip on the calendar, but manager Slaven Bilic is unbeaten in two league visits and feels optimistic.
“It’s not ideal for the first game of the season, but on the other hand it’s brilliant,†said Bilic.
“It’s always the greatest away game in the league and of course we are positive and have a chance.
“We know they are Manchester United and they improved the squad with quality, but we are looking forward to it and have good memories having drew twice there.â€
The West Ham manager revealed five senior players are missing for the opening weekend, Manuel Lanzini, Michail Antonio, Andy Carroll, Cheick Kouyate and Diafra Sakho all out of action, but Javier Hernandez will likely don the Claret and Blue for his competitive debut, in a first reunion with the club he won two Premier League titles with. Along with Marko Arnautovic, Pablo Zabaleta and Joe Hart, the new signings are ready and show good summer business for West Ham.
"We wanted to get good players with good character who know the league and we got them," Bilic said.
“Top players are hard to get but all of us are trying to get them, we’ve done the business, but I’d love one more."
London Stadium must wait until Monday 11 September for the return of football but let’s hope Sunday is the start of a great season for West Ham United.
