After showcasing Javier Hernandez and Pablo Zabaleta in our previous Ironed Out, it seemed only right that we cast a spotlight on West Ham United's second pair of high profile arrivals this summer (so far).Â
Two players who couldn't be further apart from one another have highlighted West Ham's desire to add quality over quantity in equal measure. Joe Hart has arrived at London Stadium on loan from Manchester City, and mercurial winger Marko Arnautović from Stoke City has made a switch in a new club record fee for the Hammers.Â
Hart arrives with a reputation as arguably England’s best goalkeeper. The Stevenage graduate has come under considerable scrutiny recently after being loaned out to Torino by Guardiola, who favoured Claudio Bravo at Manchester City, who in turn had an underwhelming first season at the Etihad.
In the time Hart was plying his trade in Italy, the Premier League saw a renaissance of sorts with regards English keepers, Tom Heaton and Jordan Pickford had stellar seasons last year (the latter resulting in a big money move to Everton), while the quality of Jack Butland and Foster was highlighted last season, suggesting real competition for the England number 1 spot. West Ham should now benefit from a highly-motivated Joe Hart, who, when at his best, is peerless among his English counterparts. Hart will also bring a winning mentality to West Ham, having won 2 Premier League titles, 2 League cups and an FA cup.
West Ham’s efficiency and effectiveness in completing Arnautovic's signing must be applauded - after weeks of rumours the deal seemed to be concluded quickly, to the agreement of both parties. The Austrian will offer ability in abundance - he is adaptable across the front line, as well as dangerous with both feet. Arnautović had a fruitful few years at the Potteries and it is hoped he can not only replicate his success at Stoke but build on this at London Stadium.
Jose Mourinho has stated that with the signings West Ham have made, they are genuine title contenders. Hyperbole maybe, but how far can this West Ham team really go? There's no doubt that these new signings will elevate West Ham, and come September 11, and the arrival of newly-promoted Huddersfield Town to London Stadium, we'll see for ourselves.
